Back pain rarely has only one single cause. Pain is complex: it does not arise solely at the cellular level. In addition to physical factors, psychological stress, social influences, and biological factors such as sleep deprivation or lack of exercise can also trigger and maintain pain. This does not mean that pain arises „only in the head“. Rather, the nervous system processes a wide variety of information and thereby influences our perception of pain. A modern physiotherapeutic treatment therefore does not focus solely on an MRI or a single body structure, but takes the whole person into account. Discs wear out – but this does not automatically mean that pain is present. Changes in the discs are completely normal with increasing age and are also frequently seen in people who do not have any back pain.

Therefore, such findings on MRI must always be considered in conjunction with the actual complaints and the clinical examination.

There are important and reassuring facts about this:

Discs are robust:
They are extremely stable, well anchored, and simply cannot „spring out“. Furthermore, they are rarely the sole or definitive cause of pain.

Good news regarding herniated discs:
Around two-thirds of all herniated discs are absorbed by the body over time, that is, dissolved. Even better: Symptoms can also completely subside without such resorption.

Stress protection: Why austerity is often the wrong way to go
Physical exertion cannot in any way be considered a universal cause of disc problems. Quite the opposite: discs need to be subjected to stress! Exercise keeps you healthy: Regular activities such as jogging, walking, or cycling are directly associated with improved disc health.

Inactivity promotes aging:
Lack of movement even seems to promote aging processes in the tissue.

No fear of „wear and tear“:
Anyone who avoids exercise out of fear of injury is usually acting counterproductively. What is crucial is always the individual’s tolerance level and the right type and dosage of activity.
